When is Akshaya Tritiya

Akshay tritya is one of the popular festivals in India celebrated by Hindus and Jains. As per Mahabharata, Akshaya Tritya symbolizes the beginning of Satya Yuga. Buying new items like gold or starting new venture on this day is considered very lucky.

First legend is that of Lord Krishna and his friend Sudama. It is believed that once due to financial problems Sudama’s wife sent him to meet Krishna for financial help. Sudama went to meet Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna welcomed him by hugging him and washing his feet. When he was returning back, Krishna asked what has he brought with him? Sudama had brought beaten rice or poha but was ashamed to give it to Krishna. Krishna accepted the rice and ate it with joy. Sudama went back without asking for anything. When he returned back, he found that his home was converted into a palace. This was due to boon from lord Krishna and since then the day is celebrated as Akshay Tritiya.

Buying gold is considered very auspicious on this day. It is believed that this practice brings prosperity and wealth to life. This day is also good for making charities or donations. Things like clothes, til and food items are donated to the poor people on this day. This festival is celebrated by Jain people with lot of enthusiasm as well. A large fair is held at Hastinapur on Akshay Tritya. Jains from all over the India come here and end their fast with sugarcane juice here.
