When is Gudi Padwa

Gudi Padwa is celebrated as first day of the year by Maharastrians. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the festival is celebrated as Ugadi. This is based on Luni-solar calendar which considers the position of sun and moon to divide year into months and days. Another hindu new year day based on solar calendar is known as Vaisakhi in Punjab. On this day, every house displays a Gudhi outside their home. It refers to a bamboo covered with bright green or yellow cloth. Sugar, neem leaves and mango leaves are tied at the top as well. As per a mythological story, on this Lord Rama came back after defeating Ravana. The word padwa is derived from Sanskrit word pradurbhu which means first day of the year.

Next Gudi Padwa is on 18 March 2018 (Sunday)
