Carnival Like Celebrations on Mardi Gras Day

Mardi Gras, popularly known as Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday, marks the beginning of the season of Lent. It is celebrated a day before the Ash Wednesday. This is the last night for Christians to enjoy rich and fatty foods, before beginning the ritual of fasting.

Annual Carnival Celebration

In New Orleans specifically, an annual carnival to celebrate the Mardi Gras. The carnival crews are known to organize parades to grace the occasion. You will see masquerade balls, and king cake parties becoming a part of the celebrations held during this day. It is part of the winter social season, which was the time when Southern Society Women held debutante balls.

Most of the parades start from uptown and mid-city districts. They follow the route from St. Charles Avenue to Canal Street. A lot of people flash their body parts to catch beads or throws; this is part of the tradition for this event.

Traditions for the Day

One of the most popular practice for Mardi Gras includes wearing masks and costumes. There are different social conventions which mark the traditions for the day. You will see people participating in the dancing, sports and other competitions. There are parades, and debauchery specially arranged for the people to enjoy the day ahead. What began as a single day for celebrations, is now no longer just a day. Though in United States, it has been christened the Mardi Gras Day, the celebrations go beyond a single day.

The traditions differ from city to city. The period from Epiphany to Ash Wednesday is graced at Mardi Gras in certain traditions.

The most important tradition is definitely the carnival, which people look forward to. It is all about bringing in happiness. Feasts are very important, and some of the most delicious treats are prepared to grace this occasion.
