The day when knowledge is worshiped
The Saraswati puja is done for the gaining of knowledge, wisdom, arts, and learning as well as science and technology. This day is known as the birthday of her who is the goddess of all these brilliant virtues required for life. The blessings of her can help one to get rid from ignorance and lethargy. There are many mythology books where the importance of this puja is mentioned and one of such book is Branhma vaivartya puran. As per the book Goddess Saraswati got a boon from Lord Krishna that she will be worshipped on this day by people and whoever worship her will get good knowledge and command on a number of things.
This festival falls on the Fifth day of the Magha month as per Hindu calendar when the season of spring is on. The northern and Middle parts of India celebrate this festival. People worship the goddess and perform a puja to her idol. They spread red powder known as Gulal as the symbol of Mother Goddesses’ blessings to the devotees. Various religious songs, bhajans and verses are sung by people on this day. In the southern part of India such as Tamilnadu and Kerala this puja is performed in the month of Ashwin on the ninth day of Navratri.
This festival is also known as Shri Panchami In northern parts of India. On this day the students particularly perform Puja as the goddess is known for blessings that can help them in study. There is a separate importance of consuming various yellow items such as yellow garments, yellow sweets and other food items that is used by the devotees. This festival is also related to the season harvesting in the farms as the mustard flowers bloom in this season. Hence, this day is also important for overall society.
