Vaikasi Visakam: Birthday celebrations of Lord Murugan
There is a huge diversity of festivals among India. People of same religion who believe in different gods celebrate various festivals. The Vaikasi Visakam is also one of such festivals. It is one of the most popular festivals celebrated by Tamil Hindus. This day is considered to be the birth day of Lord Murugan, (also known as Lord Kartikey). He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. His brother is Lord Ganesha.

Lord Murugan is considered to be the Lord of courage, wisdom and wealth. His birthday is celebrated as one of the most important festival for those who want prosperity and wealth. Lord Murugan is also known as Lord Kumara as well as Lord Subramanyam and Lord Arumugam. The festival of Vaikasi Visakam is observed in the month of May or June every year. According to Hindu mythology Lord Murugan has the power of looking in every direction simultaneously and for that he is blessed with various powers by gods.
Celebrations at Temples:
This day has cultural as well as religious importance in the area. The day of Vaikasi Visakam is observed on the full moon day. The devotees go to the temples of Lord Murugan and worship them with special prayers and chanting. There are a lot of followers who keep special pooja and invite people at their place for meal. People used to offer milk to the lord as per their belief and pray for the prosperity and happiness of their families. At several temples devotees also performs dugdhabhishek, jalabhishek and also offer flowers, fruits and sweets to the Lord Murugan. The festival is celebrated mostly at every temple of South India however, few temples are much famous for the celebrations. At some places women devotees also keep fast.
