Vat Purnima Vrat: For the long life of your husband
Vat Purnima Vrat is a fast kept by married women for the well-being of their husband. This day is considered as very auspicious for all Hindu women. The story behind this fast is very interesting. According to the legend Savithri saved her husband from the clutches of Yama who is the god of death. She compelled Yama to return life to her to her husband Satyawan and bless him as well as his family with health, wealth, prosperity and long life. It is also a story about the determination power of a woman.
Rituals to be performed on Vat Purnima Vrat
Vat Purnima Vrat is observed for three days. Married women observe fast for three days and break the fast only on the fourth day after routine puja. They dress up like bride .This day is dedicated to Savithri who courageously brought her husband back from death. Banyan tree which is also known as Vat Vriksha plays a very important role during this fast. Banyan tree symbolically represents Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The root is Brahma, the stem is Vishnu and leaf and branches are Shiva. Women who are observing fast tie cotton thread on the tree trunk which represents long life of their husband and also feed it with water to show devotion. They visit the lord Shiva temple and seek blessings for the longer life and better condition of their husbands. There are also many pujas carried out at various temples in these days.
