Yamuna Jayanti: Worship of river Yamuna
Yamuna Jayanti, also known as Yamuna Chhath is the conducted to worship and pay respect to goddess Yamuna. This festival is mainly celebrated in Mathura. River Yamuna is very important in Hindu religion. According to the legend it is said that Yamuna was the daughter of Lord Surya and also the sister of Yama which is the God of death. It is believed that if you take a holy dip in this river you can wash away the miserable pain of death. River Yamuna is also known as Yami. Lord Krishna along with his gopikas had played on the bank of this river. In the Vaishnav sect also this day has great significance as they worship the river Yamuna also.
Rituals to de done on Yamuna Jayanthi
Yamuna Jayanthi is mainly celebrated by people of Uttar Pradesh. Men and women pray to goddess for peace, happiness and prosperity. On this auspicious day devotes get up early in the morning and take a holy dip in this river. Devotees observe a strict fast of twenty four hours on this day. A special puja is offered to goddess Yamuna. Along with goddess Yamuna people also worship Lord Krishna. In the vaishanv sect this day has special importance and therefore many people go to temple and offer puja and sing hymns in the honour of Yamunaji. They also offer special bhog and Prasad that is later didtributed among the devotees who visit the temple. The temples which are known as havelis are specially decorated to mark this day and the idol of the Goddess Yamunaji is also well decorated on this day. The devotees wait for this day for a longer period to worship Yamunaji and pray her to forgive all their sins and bless with wealth and prosperity.
